Washington (CNN) -- A man walks through Washington's Union Station with a backpack and puts it down by a potted plant. No one notices him.
He looks like any traveler. But inside his backpack are explosives.
Five minutes later, a yellow Labrador retriever named Zeta enters the same crowded room, straining at her handler's leash.
She has picked up the scent of black powder in the air and tracks it to the foot of the ficus tree, where she sits and waits eagerly for a reward.
This is not a thwarted terrorist strike but a demonstration of what a "vapor wake" dog can do.
For years, specially trained dogs have run their noses over objects to screen for explosives. But vapor wake dogs can detect explosives in the air despite crowds, cross-currents and other odors.
Their trainers say some of the dogs have been able to enter a room and pick up the scent as much as 15 minutes after explosives have passed through. Proponents say the dogs can detect a few grams of explosives.
May 23 rd. 1:50pm. i posted this because when i watch the news on Iraq, i never see them, but if the main weapon of terrorists is explosives, they must be everywhere. literally everywhere.
Those Silent Heros...Military Working Dogs Essential Tool in Iraq...
maybe i don't see them for their own protection. Yikes.
they maybe more valuable then the men and women there. not to take anything from the men and women of course.
DefenseLink Special: Military Working Dogs Military working dogs first entered the service in March of 1942 to serve in the Army’s K-9 Corps.
Today, the dogs, who have an actual military service record book assigned to them, are still playing an active role in searching for explosives and seizing the enemy. ..
MILITARY DOGS: TODAY from Olive-Drab.com ... In Iraq and Afghanistan, several hundred Military Working Dogs perform their duties in heat and sandstorms, just like their handlers and other soldiers.
Heat exhaustion is a major concern and there must be frequent breaks and ample water to cope with it.

Can dogs detect seizures? : Epilepsy.com/Professionals
Despite the anecdotally reported benefits of dogs for people with epilepsy, many questions remain. While there is little disagreement that dogs can provide emotional support, the actual role they play with regard to predicting seizures is controversial.
There are two types of dogs that assist patients with epilepsy. Those that recognize and warn of an impending or ongoing seizure are called seizure alert dogs; those that remain with the person to assist with the aftermath of seizure activity are seizure response dogs.
Two recent reports in the medical literature question the effectiveness of seizure alert dogs in detecting epileptic seizures.
In “Wag the dog: Skepticism on seizure alert canines” (Neurology 2007;68:262),
Michael J. Doherty, MD, and Alan M. Haltiner, PhD describe a dog that warns of impending psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) and present a critical evaluation of the literature. They said that “a dog’s companionship can be reassuring and relaxing and may cut down on seizure frequency. The ability for a dog to obtain help during or after a seizure could prove lifesaving.” But they also caution that, “Without objectively clarifying if patients have epilepsy or PNES, the current literature fails to support that canines can warn of impending seizures.”
